Four Men's Seeds Fall on Day One at the English National Badminton Championships at Bolton Arena

The Men’s Singles provided the big shocks on day one of the English National Badminton Championships at Bolton Arena with four seeds crashing out.

While top seed Rajiv Ouseph eased into the last eight as he chases a record fifth title in a row, 2010 England Under 19 junior champion Josh Green crashed out in the first round.

The 19-year-old from the Isle of Man was seeded for a rematch with Ouseph in the quarter-finals, having lost to him in last year's second round.

But fifth seed Green fell at the first hurdle against Nottinghamshire's Neil White 22-20 21-18. White then booked a quarter-final with Ouseph when Sam Dobson of Surrey retired when trailing 26-28 21-15 11-7.

Ouseph knocked out Ben Dolman of Cheshire 21-16 21-8 then disposed of Yorkshire's Alex Marritt 21-9 21-8.

But Green was one of four seeds to fall. Michael Spencer-Smith was the first to go, the Hertfordshire No. 8 seed falling to Steven Cappleman of Hampshire 21-18 18-21 21-16.

Then in the second round seventh seed Nathan D'Cruz of Middlesex lost to European Under 17 winner Alex Lane of Devon 21-10 16-21 21-14 while sixth seed Robert Kettle of Surrey lost to Yorkshire's Jamie Bonsels 21-11 21-16.

Even mixed doubles top seeds and defending champions Nathan Robertson (Notts) and Bolton-born Jenny Wallwork (Yorks), who began with a bye, suffered a minor hiccup in the second round when former England international Ian Palethorpe (Lancs) and Jessica Fletcher (Yorks) took them to three games before the world No 18 pair won 21-13 19-21 21-13 to reach tomorrow's last eight and a contest with Lane and Chloe Birch.

In the women's singles four-times champion Elizabeth Cann (Jersey) got her singles challenge off to a steady start, beating Dorset's Lynnlette Aung 21-9 21-6 while defending champion and second seed Nicola Cerfontyne of Dorset defeated Yorkshire's Nicki Chan-Lam 21-14 21-8.

The women's singles second round was taking place later tonight. But it went ahead without 2010 runner-up Helen Davies of Cheshire. She had to pull out with a calf injury, giving Yorkshire's Chloe Birch a walkover into tomorrow's quarter-finals.
